Rent Construction Equipments And Use It Safely

Those who are do-it-yourselfers know that the best and least expensive way to accomplish a task is to pull out the work gloves and get after it. But does that include projects that require construction equipment? There are several things to ask yourself before you decide whether to rent (or buy) construction equipments like excavators, forklifts, wheel loaders, skid steer loaders etc or to call in the pros.

Two of the most important things to consider are cost and size of the project. Have you always wanted a pond? There is really nothing stopping you from building one if you have enough land and there are no zoning laws restricting it. That is going to be a pretty big project and you might be surprised how much earth has to be moved to create even a small pond for watering livestock.

Think you are not qualified to operate construction equipment? You might be right. If you have never operated a bulldozer, you are going to quickly find out that those professionals only make it look easy. There is a lot to learn before you can successfully move dirt the way it is supposed to be moved. But even if you know how to run a bulldozer or other new or used heavy construction equipment, you may not have enough knowledge to put the equipment to proper use.

If you know anything about ponds, you know that just digging a hole is not going to get you a pond that holds water. If you know how to go about the sealing process, whether you should have a drain and how to choose the best place for your pond, you may very well be in a position to rent a bulldozer and build your own pond.

Think you are going to need a series of ponds? In that case, you need to carefully consider how long it will take you to do the digging and get a good estimate for the cost of renting the construction equipment you need for the entire project. Do not overlook transportation fees, especially if you plan to only use the equipment for a few days, send it back and then rent again. Do not overlook your time. If you are taking time off work, figure that into the cost of renting.

Compare that to the cost of hiring someone who owns the construction equipment to get the project completed. If it is a big project, consider purchasing your own construction equipment. After you are done, you can always sell the equipment to regain at least part of your investment.

Whether you are talking about a new or used bulldozer equipment for a major earth-moving project, a Ditch Witch to lay cable or water lines, or a jackhammer to bust up a concrete pad, you may be surprised at how affordable renting construction equipment can be.

A Brief History Of Forklift Technology

Our modern economy has a tendency to take forklifts and forklift truck technology for granted. These heavy equipments were created in the beginning of the 20th century as American was still going through a rapid industrialization post World War 1. Many companies were moving from other industries into the material handling industry. Hyster, for example, started out in the logging industry, but by the 1930s started to shift its focus to the burgeoning materials handling industry and began developing Hyster forklifts.

During and after World War 2, the forklift became a staple of industrialization. They were used during the war to bring supplies to the front lines and were also used to transport military goods from American factories to foreign ports. American warehouses used forklifts and lift trucks to increase productivity and efficiency in their materials handling.

As the decades progressed, so did technology, and increasingly forklifts were going electric. Electric forklifts often provide lower operating costs and tend to be more ecofriendly than gas powered forklift trucks. Electric forklifts have become a standard for businesses that want to compete in today’s international economy.

Forklifts have come a long way from their humble origins. They were originally created by modifying tractors by applying lifts to them, but soon enough they become an entire industry of their own. The advent of electric forklifts is a testament to the ongoing evolution of forklift technology. Many industrial forklifts now utilize rear-wheel steering, increasing the ability of the forklift driver to maneuver in narrow environments.

Since forklifts are so prevalent today, there is a great market for used forklifts. Used forklift equipments provide a business the opportunity to minimize their costs and increase productivity by buying a quality used forklift, rather than paying thousands of dollars more for a new forklift. More and more businesses are turning toward buying used forklifts because buying new forklifts is considerably more expensive.

Hopefully this brief introduction to the history of forklifts and the continuing evolution of forklift technology has taught you a few things and increased your appreciation for this often overlooked tool of modernity. Forklifts will continue to be used by business all over the world and will continue to be an integral part of running a successful business and staying competitive in the increasingly international 21st century.

Inspection Is A Must While Selecting Used Excavators

Files under Excavator | Leave a Comment

A second hand or used excavator cost less than a new one. The difference can be at least 25% to 50% of the new ones. The amount depends a lot on the existing condition of the excavator and one has to be careful because even though a used one is cheaper but it could cost a lot in term of repairs. Thus the total cost involved may make it not worth buying. Hence besides only knowing what’s on paper e.g. manufactured date, date of last service, a proper physical inspection of the machine is required before signing the purchase paper.

Stage 1 - Visual Physical Inspection

1) Engine :When inspecting the engine, look around the engine compartment for sign of soot. Soot is from smoke and any sign will indicate that the engine would need overhauling. Also look around for any signs of engine oil leakages or neglect. Then look at the battery for signs of corrosion. Also inspect the air cleaner system to ensure they are working as a small amount of dust/dirt can cause engine damage. Next look at the cooling system, the cooling fans belt are tight, radiator clean as a damaged cooling and air system can cause engine overheat.

2) Cab, Stick, Boom and Bucket :A well looked after excavator will have the following signs, a cab interior reasonable in good condition and the body does not suffer from major damages. Thus look out for out of place welding and patching up which would indicate major repairs done earlier. Minor tear and scratch are ok and common in used stuffs anyway. Next inspect the bucket, make sure nothing is bent underneath. If there are it means this heavy construction equipment had been used to driving pilings, hammering rocks beside excavation. Hence due to these, a possibility that the excavator had been subjected to tasks beyond its capacity.

Next check the pivot points and look out for any slackness between pins and bushing. Any slackness may indicate the need for replacement after buying it. The most crucial pivot point is the one between the boom and the body. Check that, as it can be very expensive to replace if required. And on the boom itself, inspect the boom with a straight edge and dipper stick to make sure they are not bend or twisted.

3) Track & Undercarriage :When inspecting the tracks, look at how much wear there is and if are any connection that link all the individual metal plates tracks are broken or suffered from tear. A track that is nears it’s operation life requires replacement. Thus the cost of replacement had to be factored in. Also inspect the condition of the sprockets and rollers individually as they may need replacement. At the same time, while you’re inspecting the track and undercarriage, check the oil level and cleanliness in the final drives. Look out for leaks and wear. Make sure there are no water or foreign matter inside. Finally inspect the roller metal frame for signs of crack or repair, which is normally done by welding.

Stage 2 - Performance/operation inspection

Having done the physical inspection, the next stage is operation. This is when the excavator engine starts up and after warming up, ask for a demonstration of movement of bucket, stick and boom. This is the time to look out for slackness, which normally indicates that the bushings require replacement.

This is also the best time to inspect the hydraulic cylinders and tubes. A well maintained machine would have no signs of leakage or scratch on the chrome surface of the cylinder. A leakage may indicate contaminated hydraulic system.

Also make sure that the cylinders are not bend or damaged. This is because due to the small tolerance between the chrome tube and cylinder. Any dent in the cylinder will create a lot of wear and tear to the tubes and cylinders. Not to mention introducing metal fragments into the hydraulic system.

Next check the tracks performance and that both tracks are rotating equally. A way to check this is to drive the mini excavator over a short distance to see if it runs straight. If it does, than the drive motor is working equally well. Another way is to tilt the machine with the bucket and time the turnings of the track over a certain time. Then do the same with the other track. Both should have the same amount of rotation. If not than there is something wrong with the drive motors.

Finally, check the performance of the swing system, which includes the gears and bearing. The system should be able to rotate the cab and all with little or no deflection. It should stop and start smoothly and accurately without any sloppiness or lurching. Any signs of sloppiness are a cause for concern. Perform the swing in both clockwise and counter clockwise direction.

Different Parts of a Backhoe

A backhoe is a type of excavating or earthmoving equipment that is also known as rear actor, extractor or back actor. It has a bucket-shaped scooping tool attached at the end of consisting of a digging bucket on the end of an artificial arm. They are mostly used in constructing roads or large buildings.

This system is attached to a vehicle which enables the machinery to shift from place to place as required. It almost mimics the human hand by digging, lifting and dumping material.

A backhoe for sale consists of three parts that could be considered to be similar to a human arm: 1. The Boom. It is attached to the tractor and is like the upper arm. 2. The Stick. On one end it is attached to the vehicle and is like the forearm 3. The Bucket. The other end of the stick is attached to a hand shaped bucket.

There is also another attachment to the tractor that is called the loader. The backhoe does the digging, lifting and dumping work and the loader shifts the dug material to a different place. So basically, the backhoe gets to things underground and the loader moves things around above groud.

The tractor helps in shifting the entire system as required. This forms the whole earthmoving equipment used for construction jobs.

The driver of the vehicle is actually the operator and has three responsibilities - to move the vehicle, to make the backhoe work and the loader to shift the material.

There is a control panel on the dashboard of the tractor with the help of which he is able to operate all the three things. The operator has to be smart enough to control the backhoe and tractor movements. The loader does not require much application.

As the operator parks the tractor at the required place two leg-like support comes out and gets fixed at the sides of the tractor for extra strength and stabilizing. Now the system is ready to work. The operator chooses buttons on the dashboard to use the arm to pull out to the required point of digging. Then the operator uses another lever attached to the hand-like bucket to touch the earth from where the material is to be lifted. There is again another lever which is for the digging action. This lever will force the bucket to dig into the earth. This will fill the bucket with the material. The material is then lifted with the same levers to a dumping truck or is dumped somewhere nearby.

There are a number of manufacturers of backhoes. The major players in backhoe manufacturing are JCB, John Deere, Case, Caterpillar, etc.

Like the skid-steer loaders, compact wheel loaders and trenchers, there is also a type of backhoe called the compact backhoes. Such backhoes use light attachments and are efficient in digging and faster loading. They can dig 6-8 feet depths easily and weigh lesser than 5000 pounds. These backhoes are very user-friendly requiring minimal time to be detached from the tractor.

Apart from being versatile, a compact backhoe is also a heavy-duty earth-moving machine. And even though a compact backhoe may be small in size, it can be used in very challenging applications.

Get Knowledge About Forklift Safety Videos

It’s so easy to operate and drive a forklift that almost anyone can learn how to drive one very quickly. The forklift is an essential piece of equipment in many places such as factories, construction sites, warehouses, ship yards, etc. That’s because the forklift is highly maneuverable, even in narrow alleys. New or used forklifts for sale are often seen zipping around tight corners, moving heavy boxes or containers, and it’s one of the most efficient way to get things organized.

But unlike cars on the roads, there are no strict set of safety objects like road signs, traffic lights and so on. You can imagine what it could be like if there are many forklifts traveling at high speeds on a ship yard, unloading goods from containers. Certainly, there will be some danger involved, especially during the night.

There are close to a million forklifts in the United States, and according to the OSHA, there are close to thirty five thousand serious injuries each year and an additional sixty thousand not so serious injuries. Every year, there is an estimated eighty five fatalities caused by forklift accidents. With such alarming figures, and such widespread use of this little machine, the need to train personnel working on forklift infested premises is an urgent one.

Actually, many of such accidents can be prevented if proper safety guidelines are observed. But employees are not aware of such safety principles if they are not well trained. For instance, what to look out for when there are pedestrians in the vicinity. Or what should supervisors do when supervising forklifts in operation.

Employers can turn to forklift safety videos to provide adequate training to their employees if necessary. Such videos should point out potentially hazardous situations, what are some of the common mistakes made by employees, and how to correct these mistakes. The better videos should go into detail about forklift mechanisms.

Make understanding the forklifts an essential part of the training. For instance, learn how forklifts are operated, how they move, and so on. Having at least a basic understanding of such new or used heavy equipments, even for those who do not operate them, will help to prevent accidents. Say a pedestrian works in an environment with many forklifts but does not need to drive one himself. However, he is aware that forklifts can swerve suddenly at acute angles and will therefore keep a safe distance in the presence of these forklifts, thus avoiding potential accidents.

So you see, even having the slightest bit of awareness helps. When it comes to safety matters, lives are involved and nothing should be compromised. Invest in a little time to allow and encourage employees to go through the video training sessions and the work place will eventually develop a safety consciousness that has never been there before.
